Established in 1995 and rooted in the community, our journey began in Palm Cove, earning a reputation for reliability and excellence with a modest fleet of nine red cars.
Under the stewardship of Richard since 2016, we’ve dedicated ourselves to simplifying the car rental process, focusing on transparency and customer satisfaction.
This commitment led to our growth, expanding our fleet to 35 cars by 2022, and paving the way for the launch of our new locations in Cairns and Port Douglas in late 2022.
Today, our service proudly spans from Palm Cove to Port Douglas, offering a seamless pick-up and drop-off experience that caters to your travel needs. With a fleet of over 60 modern vehicles, we’re here to ensure that your journey through the scenic wonders of FNQ is nothing short of spectacular.

Richard Hewitson – Owner
Richard is a true advocate for the natural beauty of Tropical North Queensland, with a passion for creating effortless experiences. Since 2016, he’s been dedicated to simplifying the journey for those eager to explore this unique region.
Richard’s love for the outdoors extends beyond his professional life. He spends his free moments adventuring with Buddy, his Australian Kelpie, whether that’s running through the countryside or enjoying the tranquility of the reef. Richard’s lifestyle embodies a genuine enthusiasm for discovery and the simple pleasures of nature, inspiring a sense of adventure in everyone he meets.
Sally Potter – General Manager
Sally joined the Tropical North Car Rentals team in 2023 and quickly stepped into the role of General Manager, bringing a cool, laid-back approach to our operations. Her longstanding friendship with Richard, spanning over five years, has cemented a shared vision for stress-free travel experiences.
When she’s not at the helm, Sally is all about movement and endurance. As a dedicated triathlete, her days off are spent cycling, running, swimming, or exploring the reef. Sally embodies a passion for both the great outdoors and ensuring every customer enjoys their journey with ease, reflecting her belief in the perfect balance between work and play.
Angelique Patterson – Accounts
Angelique manages accounts at our Port Douglas office and juggles life as a busy mum to two energetic toddlers. Her role extends beyond numbers; she’s a local guide at heart, eager to share her favourite spots with anyone looking to explore. Ange’s recommendations come from personal experience, whether it’s finding peace along the waterfalls and trails of the Tablelands or enjoying the clear waters of Lake Eacham.
A visit to the Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas is also on her list, offering close encounters with kangaroos and a chance to spot vibrant birds. Angelique embodies the spirit of discovery, making her not just an integral part of our team but also a valuable resource for those wanting to experience the true essence of our tropical paradise.
